Puerto Princesa Subterranean River

The Subterranean River is UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the longest navigable subterranean river in the world.

The tour companies will pick you up from within 10km of the Puerto Princesa airport! This is around 7-8am latest and then follows a 1.5-2 hour drive to Sabang Wharf.

The guide on our trip was named RR and they collected our fees, including our environment fee, and did all the permit work for us! Because of this we didn’t have to wait in a line for 3 hours to register. This left us time for a side excursion and we had the choice between the Zip Line (550 piso) or a Mangrove River boat ride(~400piso).

  • Side excursion-Zip Line!

First is a super short ride across a small river on a floating bundle of wood for lack of better words followed by a short hike to the zip line.

While quite short (ride is about 1.5 mins) it really is a breathtaking view of the mountains and coastline. For the price and not having to wait in those long lines for permits, I enjoyed it.

  • Lunch

Lunch is included and delicious. It’s provided by a local family. Food IS limited by supply, definitely enjoyed the views of the beach. However, the number of stray dogs and cats surrounding the picnic area absolutely broke our hearts.

  • Drive to Sabang wharf

Another short drive to the wharf brings you to a picturesque little area to wait for the motorized boats to bring us to the actual underground river. then is a gorgeous, about 15 mins boat ride.

  • The river!

It was difficult to get pictures inside because of how dark. It was of course at the end of the day, a cave. But I thoroughly enjoyed the tour guide and the audio recordings explaining different rock formations and curious shapes they’ve found within.

Overall, worth it for its price. A place I’d probably only go once, but was grateful for the experience
